Beyond the Inflection Point and on to the Future
Article by: Rick Severinghaus

Rick Severinghaus
Excom Chair

Much has been happening across the M&S community over the past year. Prominent among all the issues we see in addressing standards issues is the growing recognition that, as a community, simulation and modeling challenges have increasingly moved from the local, through the regional, to the global. Whereas 10 years, or even 3 years, ago, many projects were being addressed at the local and regional level, many of today's prominent M&S issues require solutions encompassing a global view, with integration of diverse and often non-aligned segments to provide solutions to serious real-world problems. Our current Workshop theme provides an excellent example of this trend; for nations and governments to be able to plan for, manage, and execute effective societal and homeland security programs, global solutions are required - systems, processes, and procedures of a design to span political, diplomatic, economic, and social boundaries, on short notice, to generate timely and effective response to large scale disasters, both natural and man-made. ...

Conference Committee Corner
Article by: Ralph Weber

As I finish my second year as your Conference Committee Chair, I believe that we have achieved some outstanding results.

The Spring 07 SIW in Norfolk, VA, 25-30 March 2007, was again collocated with the SCS SpringSim 07 conference. For the first time the Behavior Representation in M&S (BRIMS) 2007 was collocated here also. The three organizations meeting at the same time was a challenge to schedule and deconflict. Your Executive-Director (Workshop and Conference Affairs) Dr. Duncan Miller was up to the task. The Virginia Modeling and Simulation Consortium (VMASC) hosted this joint event. The Spring 07 SIW can boast several firsts. The first M&S in Education night was organized to provide a showcase for student research in M&S. The BRIMS reception and poster session on Tuesday evening allowed for informal interaction with some very interesting authors. ...

Directed Energy Modeling and Simulation Experiment Results
Article by: Joe Sorroche and Riley Rainey
IEEE 1278.1a, the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol, is currently being updated by the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) DIS Product Development Group (PDG). The DIS PDG is creating new Protocol Data Units (PDUs), and further defining existing PDUs. The Directed Energy (DE) Tiger team, part of the DIS PDG, has designed two new DIS Protocol Data Units (PDUs) for high fidelity DE modeling and simulation: DE Fire and DE Damage Status. These PDUs include many DE specific parameters necessary for high fidelity DE weapons and associated effects modeling. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) provided funding to develop and experiment with these new PDUs during the Advanced Concept Event (ACE) 06. This event provided a proper venue to test the new DE PDUs, with interactions between shooters and targets. This experiment also tested the interoperability of higher fidelity DE PDUs with legacy simulations that model DE weapons using the existing DIS standard. The experiment was conducted at the USAF Distributed Mission Operations Center (DMOC)....

Welcome to the Fall 2007 edition of the SISO Simulation Technology On-Line Magazine. With each passing year we realize more and more how the M&S community is growing and evolving and how the SISO family is making a greater impact on that community by providing much needed standards products, forums for lively intellectual exchange and venues for sharing of experiences, products and services. Judging by the level of interactions, the lively debates and the genuine concern for one another's professionsal and personal lives, SISO is truely a family. We think that is great! ...

The forthcoming 2007 Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop (SIW) will include, as part of the main Plenary on Monday afternoon, a Standards Plenary presentation. This presentation will provide information about the different SISO Standards Activity Committee (SAC) Groups and explain how to get involved. This presentation will also provide information about the liaisons with other Standards Organizations....

SISO Elections
Article by: Duncan Miller

SISO recently completed its annual elections for 2007-2008. Any SISO member in good standing is eligible to self-nominate for a SISO committee and to vote in SISO elections. The elected committee members then elect their own officers. The new committees and officers assume their positions at the close of the Fall SIW in September....
