Simulation Conceptual Modeling Study Group Gets Rolling
|
Article by: Jake Borah
Why are users frequently dissatisfied with newly developed simulations? The reason is that their simulations don’t adequately address the user’s actual needs. Why don’t the simulations address the user’s needs? It is because those needs have not been accurately described. How can the user’s needs be accurately described? They can be described through the use of validated simulation conceptual models. How do we build validated conceptual models? That is the question that the Simulation Conceptual Modeling Study Group (SCM SG) has been formed to answer....

The XMSF Profile Study Group Starts Work
|
Article by: Katherine L. Morse
The Department of Defense (DoD) is engaged in warfighting and institutional transformation for the new millennium. In parallel, DoD Modeling & Simulation (M&S) needs to identify and adopt transformational technologies providing direct tactical relevance to warfighters. Software systems that composably scale to worldwide scope utilize the World Wide Web. Therefore, it is evident that an extensible web-based framework offers great promise to scale up the capabilities of M&S systems to meet the needs of training, analysis, acquisition, and the operational warfighter......

University of Alabama, Huntsville Modeling & Simulation Program
|
Article by: Bernard J. Schroer
The 2003 SimSummit agenda at the 2003 Summer Computer Simulation Conference in Montreal included for discussion the body of knowledge for modeling and simulation. M&S is maturing and expanding. Companies and the government now have positions called “simulationists.” At the same time, questions are being asked concerning the education and training requirements for a simulationist....

Simulation @ Law
|
Article by: Candace L. Conwell
Our courts, with their case matter and ensuing decisions, provide a documented, dynamic, “sliding window” on the problems and priorities of our society. Anyone “looking” through this window on society can see the influence of high technology reflected in the increasingly sophisticated preparation and presentation of court cases. Replacing charts and PowerPoint in the courtroom are video conferencing, virtual video case repositories, digital video depositions, and, of course, simulation....

Spring SIW and EURO-SIW 2003 SIWzie Awards
|
Article by: Sharon Hardy
After each workshop or conference, the Conference Committee or Program Committee solicits nominations from the Session or Forum leadership for papers considered to be "the most important to be read by the people who were not able to attend the Workshop." Nominated papers are then read by members of the Conference or Program Committee, who vote for the papers considered to be the most significant presented at that workshop or conference.
SISO extends our congratulations to the authors of the following papers that have been selected to receive a 2003 Spring SIW (Orlando, March 2003) and 2003 Euro-SIW (Stockholm, Sweden 2003) "SIWzie Award". ...

From the EXCOM Chair
|
Article by: Warren Katz
The Spring 03 SIW was a notable accomplishment for two reasons. Firstly, it was the first time we had an SIW outside of the Holiday Inn International Drive. Secondly, it was the first experiment in co-location of an SIW with another conference. In this case it was the SCS Advanced Simulation Technology Conference (ASTC). We believe this is a monumental step towards the consolidation of events in the modeling and simulation industry, something that SISO has been pushing for....

SAC Update
|
Article by: Michael O'Connor
I started the last SAC column by saying the previous six months had been a busy time for SISO standards. Since then, we have been even busier. By the Fall 03 SIW there will be eleven Study Groups (SGs) and six Product Development Groups (PDGs). SISO through the various workshops provides a forum for simulation developers to meet and exchange ideas. Many organizations provide forums for interacting. SISO not only provides for the exchange of ideas, but takes the ideas to the next level as standards products. This is appropriate because standards is literally SISO’s middle name....

Simulation Interoperability Workshops: The CC Report
|
Article by: Rick Sharp
With the Fall 03 SIW looming on the horizon I can’t help but look back as what an exciting and rewarding year we have had in 2003. Our workshop attendance is going up, as is the quality of the papers we are receiving. We’ve seen new forums starting up. But most important, we have numerous new Study and Product Development Groups being established. All together, SISO is growing to meet the needs of the M&S community....
