Resolution to Adopt a Code of Professional Ethics for Simulationists
Article by: Bruce Fairchild  (fairchild@knology.net)

At the Society for Computer Simulation International (SCS) Board of Directors Meeting in Montreal, July 24, 2003, the SCS adopted a Code of Professional Ethics for Simulationists, effective January 1, 2004.

The SCS invites all organizations active in the simulation community to simultaneously adopt this Code as of January 1, 2004.

The SCS Board of Directors feels that an ethics code is a necessary element for simulation to be recognized as a profession, as recommended at the SimSummit, at a July 2002 gathering of leadership representatives of a broad spectrum of simulationists.

Professor Tuncer I. Ören, the lead author of the Code, intends to list those who adopt the Code at the SimEthics web site he maintains: http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~oren/SCS_Ethics/ethics.htm. Please inform him at oren@site.uottawa.ca of any actions you take toward adoption of the Code.

The full resolution as approved by the SCS Board of Directors is as follows:

Whereas, The SimSummit, in July 2002, resolved that a code of professional ethics should be adopted for the simulation profession; and

Whereas, A Code of Professional Ethics for Simulationists was presented at the 2002 Summer Simulation Conference and published in its Proceedings; and

Whereas, The Code of Professional Ethics is publicly available on the web at http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~oren/SCS_Ethics/ethics.htm; and

Whereas, The rationale for the Code of Professional Ethics has been well thought out, published in the Proceedings of the 2002 Summer Computer Simulation Conference, and is publicly available on the web at http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~oren/SCS_Ethics/ethics.htm; and

Whereas, A code of professional ethics is a necessary element for simulation to be widely accepted as a profession; and

Whereas, Adherence to a code of ethics allows simulationists to demonstrate acceptance of their responsibilities and accountabilities; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Board of Directors of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International (SCS) adopts the referenced Code of Ethics for Simulationists, for itself and its Members, effective January 1, 2004; and

Resolved, That Officers and Directors of SCS invite other simulation organizations to similarly adopt the Code of Ethics for Simulationists, also effective January 1, 2004.
