2005 Euro SIW Call For Papers
You are invited to participate in the 2005 SISO European Simulation Interoperability Workshop (Euro-SIW). Please redistribute this message to other relevant email lists, as appropriate. A PDF version of this announcement will be posted on the SISO web site. 

This workshop will cover a wide range of modeling and simulation (M&S) issues, applications, and communities. The Workshop will include multiple tracks and special sessions addressing simulation interoperability issues and proposed solutions; tutorials on state-of-the-art methodologies, tools, and techniques; and exhibits presenting the latest technological advances. 

Additional information about this Workshop will be posted on the SISO web site as further details become available. 

SITE AND ACCOMMODATIONS: The Workshop will be held at the Pierre Baudis Conference Centre in Toulouse, France. See the conference centre website at http://www.centre-congres-toulouse.fr (click on the UK flag at the top to see the web pages in English). A list of nearby hotels will be posted on the SISO web page. 

ACTIVITIES INCLUDED: The registration fee includes coffee and tea breaks. Breakfast is generally included in the hotel rates. A Monday evening reception is also included for registrants and guests. 

REGISTRATION: Registration information will be posted on the SISO web site as soon as arrangements are finalized. Registration will be handled via the IEEE Conference Management Services web site, similar to the way registration is handled for the SIWs in the US. International credit card payments will be accepted. We plan to begin accepting reservations before the end of January. 

TUTORIALS: Tutorials will be offered on Monday morning. Watch the Euro-SIW web page for details. 

TECHNICAL EXHIBIT INFORMATION: Several types of exhibits and demonstrations will be set up in the Conference Centre, ranging from poster sessions by workshop presenters to product demonstrations. If you or your organization would like to set up an exhibit, see the contact information on the Euro-SIW web page. 

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INFORMATION: The Workshop invites papers and presentations relating to distributed simulation applications and technologies, interoperability issues and special topics, as summarized below. Abstracts will be reviewed and selected for consideration by the Program Committee. An "Author's Guide" is posted on the 2005 EURO SIW Hompage.

CALL FOR PAPERS INFORMATION Papers and presentations are solicited in each of the areas listed below. Generally, papers and presentations are considered under two main categories: 
  • User Forums, which examine and promote topics of interest related to the use, adequacy of available simulation capabilities and new capabilities needed by M&S users 
  • Specialty Area Forums, which examine and promote current and emerging simulation processes and technology.
The track organization of the workshop will depend on the nature and content of the specific submissions received. 

User Community Forums include: 

Analysis (ANL)
Interoperability issues and uses of distributed models and simulations for analysis purposes, including experiment design and data analysis. 

Research, Development, and Engineering (RD&E)
Interoperability issues and uses of distributed models and simulations for research, development and engineering purposes. 

Test and Evaluation (T&E)
Uses of advanced distributed simulation (ADS) in test and evaluation (T&E), including the incorporation of live entities with virtual and constructive simulations, and with linking historically standalone T&E facilities into distributed simulations. 

Training and Advanced Distributed Learning (TRAIN)
Use of simulations that provide individual, sub-team, and team training to system operators, team leaders, tactical decision makers, and other hands-on users, as well as higher echelon military staffs or their civilian equivalents. Issues of ADL as it applies to the M&S community, including the Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) and the education, training, and performance support needs and requirements of users and implementers of ADL technologies. 

System Acquisition and Product Development (SAPD)
Simulation-based Acquisition (SBA), including integration and reuse of distributed models and simulations for the entire system/product life cycle, as well as the interoperability of systems of systems. Subjects include policy and process approaches, establishment of business cases for M&S and solutions to intellectual property issues, and the value of standards, information sharing, reuse, collaboration, and work force perspectives. 

Policy and Standards (POLICY)
If we receive and accept a sufficient number of papers in the policy and standards area, we may schedule a block of the SAPD/SBA session aimed specifically at these topics. 

Specialty Area Forums include 

Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR)
Modeling of C4ISR systems and information operations, development of tactical decision aids, and stimulation of live systems. Use of C4ISR data models, software components and architectures in models and simulations. Real-world applications that show interoperability solutions between C4ISR architectures and M&S architectures. Proposals for migration and overarching approaches, such as commercial information technology standards, for interoperability. 

Communication, Frameworks, and Infrastructure (CFI)
Technologies that support interoperation and run-time execution of distributed simulations. Topics include performance data, implementation and design details, usage strategies, networking techniques, fault tolerance, security considerations, and middleware or other frameworks for constructing, utilizing, or extending simulation infrastructure. 

Distributed Simulation Process and Tools (DSPT)
Developing a generalized system engineering process for constructing and executing distributed simulations. Includes "lessons learned" solutions from creating real-world, useful M&S applications, including problems of integration, scalability, reuse, robustness, and effectiveness. 

Behavior Representation in Modeling and Simulation (BEH)
Issues that influence the representation of humans in models and simulations, ranging from providing appropriate interfaces to live humans so that they may act as entities in simulations to automating human decision-making processes. 

Logistics and Enterprise Models (LOG)
Simulations of supply chains, logistics management processes, logistics policies, and enterprise process simulations. The latter include executable models of work flow, manufacturing, distribution, transportation and customer, patient, crowd, or traffic flow. 

Medical Simulation (MED)
Medical simulation needs interoperability standards that build upon already extensive medical interface standards for application in areas such as operational systems for robot assisted surgery; command & control systems for medical situational awareness; medical models of varying resolutions for research and development; training systems for instruction and rehearsal; imaging systems for treatment planning and assessment; and logistic planning systems for security and disaster response. 

Simulated Natural Environment/Sensor Modeling (SNE/SENS)
Multi-domain use and reuse of digital representations of the natural environment, including land, oceanic, atmospheric, and space data. Includes simulation of environmental effects on sensor systems and the incorporation of sensor system simulations into other simulations. 

Vehicle/Weapon System Modeling (VWS)
Development and reuse of weapon/vehicle system simulations, including space, air, ground, and sea environments. 

Verification, Validation & Accreditation (VV&A)
Methodologies, procedures, and associated techniques for establishing the credibility of federations.
